The 63rd Kerala State School Kalolsavam begins this morning at the Central Stadium, with spectators eagerly awaiting the dazzling performances of over 14,000 students from all 14 districts of the state. Initiated in 1957, just a year after the formation of Kerala, the School Kalolsavam has evolved significantly, offering a more diverse and captivating cultural feast each year. While the inaugural festival featured competitions in just 22 events, this year, talented young performers who triumphed in district-level contests will compete in 249 categories.

Over the next five days and nights, the capital city will witness a vibrant showcase of artistic talent, delighting audiences with visual and auditory spectacles. Education Minister V Sivankutty reminded participants that the festival should not be viewed merely as a competition but as a celebration. He emphasized the importance of participation and camaraderie in keeping the spirit of the festival alive, especially as the intensity of competition grows every year. Behind the scenes, the pressure among parents often adds to the competitive fervour, sometimes overshadowing the festival's true essence and values. Sometimes, students and parents tend to forget the true purpose and dignity of the festival in the eagerness to secure first place in the competitions.

We hope that the five-day cultural extravaganza becomes a joyous experience for students, parents, and spectators alike, without giving rise to complaints. Organizing the School Arts Festival, renowned as the largest adolescent arts festival in the country, is a significant challenge for both the government and the organizers. Despite extensive preparations, occasional complaints and criticisms are inevitable in an event of this scale—a common occurrence in such grand festivals. The main venue, the Central Stadium, features a German tent capable of accommodating around 10,000 spectators and will serve as the festival’s primary stage. The dining area for the festival is set up in a massive tent at the Putharikkandam Grounds. Comprehensive arrangements for accommodation and transportation have also been made to cater to the needs of the students.

Time constraints remain a significant challenge for the organizers. Competitions have never been completed within the scheduled time in the festival's history. The inclusion of appeals brought through court orders often extends the duration of events, particularly in dance categories, which draw a large audience. A widespread criticism is that the abundance of costumes and accessories in dance events creates disparities among participants. There is some truth to the claim that only those who can afford to spend significantly can participate in such categories. The School Kalolsavam is returning to the capital city after nine years. Thiruvananthapuram residents, known for their warm reception of any event, are expected to make this adolescent arts festival an unforgettable experience. Wishing the festival every success once again!
