Nitin Gadkari announces cashless treatment scheme for road accident victims

NEW DELHI: Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari announced a new scheme of cashless treatment, to be provided at hospitals for those injured in road accidents. If the accident is reported to the police within 24 hours, medical expenses up to seven days or up to a maximum of Rs 1.5 lakh will be provided. Two lakhs will be provided as compensation to dependents in hit-and-run cases resulting in death.

The minister said that the scheme implemented on an experimental basis in some states is being revised and extended to the entire country. In 2024, 1.8 lakh people died in road accidents in India.

The minister also informed that the smart mobility system (VAHAN, SARATHI) providing all transport services will be completed by the end of March.
