NOIDA: Two youths in their 20s were killed after they slept leaving a pot of chickpeas on a burning stove. They left the chickpeas to cook and did not turn off the stove. The two dead are Upendra (22) and Shivam (23), who were living in a rented house in Basai village in Noida.
The two were running a stall selling chola battura. They used to prepare food overnight for the stall the next morning. On the night of the incident, they put the chickpeas on the stove to cook. The two went to sleep without remembering this. Seeing smoke coming out of the house, the neighbors broke opened the door and rushed them to the hospital, but their lives could not be saved.
Noida Central Zone Assistant Commissioner of Police Rajiv Gupta said the room got filled with smoke as the chickpeas continued to cook on the stove. The youths died due to inhaling toxic gas like carbon monoxide. The police said there were no signs of injury on their bodies. The police also said that the bodies have been sent for postmortem.
Carbon monoxide is an odorless poisonous gas. It is released when fuel is burned in vehicles, stoves, ovens, grills, generators, etc. It can accumulate in closed spaces, the police said.
