IIT Madras research scholar faces sexual assault near campus, bakery worker arrested

CHENNAI: One person has been arrested for sexually assaulting a research student at IIT Madras. A native of Uttar Pradesh, a bakery worker near the campus, was arrested in the case. The incident happened on Tuesday evening. One of the students who went to the bakery on the main road in Sriram Nagar near the college campus was assaulted. The students first filed a complaint at the Kotturpuram police station. This complaint was later sent to Abhiramapuram All Women Police Station and a case was registered. The bakery employee was arrested while the investigation is ongoing.

According to IIT Madras authorities, the accused is not a contract worker within the campus but is an employee at a shop stationed outside the campus premises. CCTV cameras have been installed throughout the IIT to ensure the safety of the students. Students have been advised to be cautious while going out. In the statement, IIT Madras assured to support the student unequivocally in the case.

Meanwhile, on December 23 last year, a student of Anna University in Tamil Nadu was sexually assaulted, which resulted in a huge uproar all across the state.
