TEL AVIV: Israel carried out heavy airstrikes in Gaza as the ceasefire was due to take effect on Sunday. 81 people including children were killed in the attack. More than 200 people were injured. Bombings took place in schools and other places where refugees were staying. The sudden move from Israel has raised many eyebrows and instilled doubt about the ceasefire agreement falling out.

Israel has yet to officially ratify the ceasefire agreement. For this, the cabinet vote supposed to be held on Thursday morning was postponed. In the meanwhile, Israel accused Hamas of ‘blackmailing’ at the last minute to subvert the terms of the agreement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the cabinet meeting will be held only after the mediating countries confirm that Hamas has accepted all the conditions.

Hamas responded by calling Israel's accusations baseless. The Israeli people are also demanding the return of the hostages as soon as possible. Hamas has agreed to release 33 hostages in the first phase of a six-week ceasefire. Israel has concluded that only 60 of the 94 hostages in Gaza are alive.

Far-right activists in the Netanyahu government are trying all ways to kill the peace agreement. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich threatened to take off support for the ruling party if Israel go along with the agreement. Bezalel wants the war to continue until Hamas is defeated.
