THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The court sentenced the stepfather to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 26,000 in the case of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl. The court acquitted the mother of the girl who was involved in the abuse, finding her not guilty. Judge R Rekha of Thiruvananthapuram fast-track special court ruled that the stepfather would be imprisoned for an additional three months if the fine is not paid.
The incident related to the case took place on August 3, 2020. The girl was living with her stepfather and mother in a house in Balaramapuram. In the middle of the night, when the girl was lying on the bed, the accused entered the room and tried to rape the girl. The frightened girl hid in the bushes near the home. The accused went to the bushes, beat the girl and brought her home.
After the girl informed her father's relatives the next day, they came and took the girl to her father's house. Later, a complaint was filed with the police. The girl testified that her stepfather had tried to molest her many times before. A case was filed against the mother as the second accused because she knew about the incident but did not disclose it.
During the trial, the girl did not say anything against her mother even though she said that she was molested by her stepfather. So the court acquitted the mother as there was no evidence against her. Special Public Prosecutor RS Vijay Mohan and Adv RY Akhilesh appeared for the prosecution. Vizhinjam police officers SS Saji and KL Sampath investigated the case. The prosecution examined 18 witnesses and produced 23 documents.
