KOCHI: "Will come back soon. There’s much to do in the constituency." Speaking over the phone from her room at Renai Medicity in Palarivattom, MLA Uma Thomas’s voice carries the strength of resilience. In a 15-minute conversation with Kerala Kaumudi, she discussed the accident and the work that remains to be completed in her constituency. This is the first time she spoke to Kerala Kaumudi since the injury she sustained from a fall during a dance event at Kaloor Stadium on December 29.

How is your health now?
I’m much better. Every day I can feel the improvement. However, doctors say it will take some time for a full recovery. There are three bruises on one side of the lungs and one on the other, which will heal only with rest. I feel tired if I breathe heavily, and I lie down for a while when that happens. Otherwise, the issues are minimal, and I can eat food without difficulty.

Do you recall the accident?
I don’t even remember leaving home that day—it was such a severe fall. Later, my children showed me video footage to help me recall what happened. Initially, I hesitated, but the doctors insisted that patients should understand their injuries and health conditions.

What was it like watching the footage?
The most terrifying part wasn’t the fall but seeing myself being carried away with blood everywhere. For two or three days, I had doubts about my recovery—whether there could be any undetected severe issues.

Who invited you to the dance event?
Actor Sijoy Varghese personally came home to invite me. I called him later, and he said he had been praying for me since the accident.

How are you coordinating works in the constituency?
The doctors have recommended at least a month of rest. I’m managing the work through my office and secretary. I receive daily updates on the status of various projects. Yesterday, I spoke with the Water Authority regarding drinking water issues, which is my top priority. I am focusing on completing pending works. The party's mandalam and block presidents are actively assisting me.

What about the government’s support?
I’m extremely grateful for the government’s support from the very first day of the accident. It is reassuring to see everyone stand with you in times of crisis. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan spoke to me for a while yesterday. Ministers Veena George, Kadannappally Ramachandran, and R. Bindu have also been very supportive.

Support from the party?
Words cannot express my gratitude. Leaders from the AICC, including Ajay Maken, Ramesh Chennithala, KC Venugopal, KPCC President K Sudhakaran, Opposition Leader VD Satheesan, MPs, and MLAs, have all been reaching out. It is a great relief for my children as well.

About your treatment
The doctors and nurses are taking exceptional care of me. Sometimes I wonder if I could ever repay such kindness. I feel like they want my recovery even more than I do. Special mention must go to Dr Krishnanunni Polakkulath, the Medical Director at Renai Medicity, for his dedicated attention and care. I hope to be discharged within a week. My focus is on regaining full health. I’m staying informed about all developments and listening to the news. My sons, Vishnu Thomas and Vivek Thomas, are always by my side.
