WASHINGTON: Republican leader Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on Monday. The ceremony started at 10.30 pm Indian time inside Capitol Hill where the US Congress meets. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts delivered the oath of office.
J.D. Vance also took over as Vice President in the ceremony. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, Argentine President Javier Milei and Chinese Vice President Han Zheng were in attendance. This is the first presidential swearing-in inside the Capitol in 40 years. The ceremony was moved indoors due to severe winter weather. The oath of office is usually administered on the dais, in front of the Capitol. Trump's first term was during 2017-2021.
In his speech after taking the highest office, Trump minced no words and harshly criticized the outgoing Biden administration. Trump said the period of betrayal was over citing the former rule under Biden. The new president also vowed to throw out illegal infiltrators from the US while also asserting that the US under him would be not a great haven for Transgender community. Trump is likely to roll back transgender protections and end DEI programs. However, Trump assured that his prime focus would be on closing down the borders with Mexico.
