'Madly in love that Sharon protected her even while battling death'; says Court before awarding death penalty to Greeshma

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Before awarding the death penalty for the gruesome crime, the court enumerated the brutality involved in the Sharon murder case, which has acquired an infamous status over time in Kerala.

According to the court:

  • The accused tried to commit murder even while in the relationship. She gave a message to society that those in love cannot be trusted.
  • The accused summoned her beau to her house on the pretext of lovemaking but carried out a brutal murder.
  • Even after the crime, the accused until the last minute tried several tactics to picture herself as innocent.
  • The accused knew that she would not die by consuming Lizol, but did the act to mislead the case and generate sympathy.
  • The accused continued physical relationship with Sharon even after getting her marriage fixed to another person. She even tricked Sharon into believing that they would elope together.
  • The pain that Sharon went through is indescribable. The post-mortem report said that all his internal organs were in a rotten state.
  • He couldn’t drink a drop of water for 11 days. Doctors have testified that he even suffered severe pain in the genitals.
  • Greeshma planned and executed 'slow poisoning' to kill Sharon.
  • Sharon was so mad in love that he wanted to protect Greeshma even on his deathbed. Till the time of death, he addressed Greeshma as ‘Vava’.

Greeshma (24) is the youngest accused and the second woman sentenced to death in Kerala. After the verdict, she was shifted to Attakulangara Women's Jail. The execution is subject to the approval of the High Court. There are 48 pieces of circumstantial evidence against Greeshma.

Sharon's father Jayaraj, mother Priya and brother Shimon were present in the court. Hearing the verdict, the parents burst into tears. Before the verdict, they were called to the judge's chamber.

  • Murder (Section 302): Death penalty
  • Abduction (364) - 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment, one lakh fine
  • Giving poison (328) - 5 years’ rigorous imprisonment 50,000 fine. Six months additional imprisonment in case of failure to pay the fine.
  • Misleading the police, concealing the crime - 2 years’ imprisonment.
