KOLKATA: Sanjay Roy, the accused in the RG Kar rape and murder case, will be made to undergo hard labour in prison and will receive a daily wage of Rs 105. Authorities have stated that he will be made to work hard in prison.
The authorities have granted permission for the accused to walk and exercise within his jail cell. "The accused will have to work hard. He is no longer a prisoner awaiting trial. Since he has no prior experience in skilled labour, he will be assigned a job that pays 105 rupees a day," said a senior official from the prison department.
The CJM Sessions Court in Kolkata had sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment until death, along with a fine of 50,000 rupees. According to the compensation rules, the state government is required to pay 17 lakhs as compensation to the parents of the deceased doctor. The compensation includes 10 lakhs for the murder and 7 lakhs for the rape.
The CBI had strongly argued for the imposition of the death penalty. The grief and anger of the doctor’s parents were evident when they spoke in front of the judge, calling for the death sentence and rejecting the compensation. The state government is preparing to approach the High Court, demanding the death penalty for the accused.
