ALAPPUZHA: An elderly couple were charred to death after their house caught fire in Mannar on Saturday. The incident took place at 3 am today. Meanwhile, the couple’s son Vijayan confessed to the crime. Kottamuri natives, Raghavan (92) and his wife Bharati (90) were killed in the incident.

Neighbours and relatives said that Vijayan used to get drunk and get into fights with his parents regarding property rights. Vijayan's nephew Vishnu told the media that the elderly couple were severely beaten up by the accused just two days back.

Though initially thought of as a fire accident, the Police felt something out of place as it was found that Vijayan was absconding after the incident. He was caught soon and questioned by police when the truth came out. The mortal remains have been shifted to Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.
