BEIJING: Severe criticism breaks out against a Chinese company that has displayed visuals of employees using the toilet in the company's reception area. The company, Lixun Diansheng is located in Shenzhen located in Guangdong Province. The company responded to the controversy after it became public. The company said that some of its employees are spending too much time in the toilet, and this has been done to prevent this behaviour. The incident occurred on January 20th.
These visuals went viral on social media, sparking severe public criticism, reported South China Morning Post. The company responded to this by saying 'some of the employees were spending too much time in the toilet - smoking, playing mobile games. They don't leave the toilet for others. This is the reason why we took such an action.'
Lawyer Zhu Xue at Celue Law Firm told the media that such actions from the company step on the privacy rights of the employees. 'The company has a right to control the lazy behaviour of its employees, but these kinds of actions are not how you deal with it', said the lawyer.
These kinds of strange happenings are not all that unusual in China. In November 2021, news came out that a prominent electrical appliance retailer called GOME has monitored the internet usage of its employees. Actions were taken against employees who were found to have played video games and engaged in online chatting, and this led to public controversy. Another company based in Shenzhen which has monitored employees seeking employment in other companies, and blocked such professional networking sites, has received public attention.
