THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: College of Agriculture has appointed Cheruvayal Raman, the tribal farmer from Wayanad and guardian of rare seeds, as its honorary professor. The appointment is for a term of one year under its Professor of Practice designation. Vice Chancellor Dr. B. Ashok issued a statement following a request from P. Prasad, Minister of Agriculture and Pro-Chancellor of the college.
Vice Chancellor will decide on the monthly honorarium for Raman as per the rules. This is the first time when a farmer is appointed as an honorary professor. This decision was followed after a report and an editorial was published by Kerala Kaumudi detailing the economic hardships faced by the farmer, requesting governmental intervention even as he was the recipient of Padma Shri.
Currently, Raman is appointed as a lecturer in the Regional Agricultural Research Station in Ambalavayal among other centres. Raman will also share his experiential knowledge with those who visit his farm, including researchers.
