VELLARADA/THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An elderly man in Vellarada was hacked to death by his son, an MBBS student. The deceased was Jose (70), a native of Charuvilakkam, Kiliyoor, Vellarada. His son Prijil (29) surrendered at the police station.

Prijil gave a statement to the police that the reason for the murder was that his father did not allow him to live independently. The incident took place at around 9.45 pm last night. Locals who rushed to the spot after hearing the screams of Jose's wife Sushama, found Jose hacked to death in the kitchen of the house. Jose was hacked in the chest and neck. Sushama, who was unconscious following the incident, was admitted to Vellarada Hospital by local people. The body was shifted to the Parasala Taluk Hospital morgue after completing the police procedures.

Prajil, an MBBS student in China, wrote the exam but did not pass. He stayed home with his parents most of the time after returning to his hometown due to COVID. Locals say that he did not leave the house. Jose has been running a business called Brothers Traders in Killiyur for years. His daughter Prajila is married and lives in Chennai.
