NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has questioned Governor RN Ravi's decision to withhold the bills passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly without signing them. The court observed that the bills cannot be denied assent due to the Governor's displeasure. The court also expressed concern as to why it took three years to identify the problems in the bills. The court also asked for an explanation of the real reason for withholding the bills.

The dispute between the Tamil Nadu Governor and the state government over the passage of bills reached the Supreme Court in 2023. The state government informed the Supreme Court that the Governor had sent 10 bills passed by the Assembly to the President. Expressing concern over this, the Supreme Court said that the Governor seems to have adopted his own procedure. The case will continue for hearing again on Friday.
