KOCHI: Investigation continues into the death of a three-year-old boy who fell into a garbage pit near Nedumbassery airport. Police have registered a case of unnatural death in the incident. The negligence in digging a garbage pit near the airport premises will be investigated in detail. After completing the post-mortem procedures, the body will be handed over to the relatives.

Ritan Jaju, the son of a Rajasthan couple, who had landed in Kochi from Jaipur the other day, died in the incident. The accident occurred yesterday around 12.30 pm when the parents went to eat at a nearby cafe. Ritan was playing with his brother outside the café when he fell into the pit.

The toddler remained in the four-foot-deep pit for almost ten minutes. Noticing Ritan’s missing, the perturbed parents reached out of the café and informed security guards about the incident. The subsequent inspection of CCTV footage showed the child falling into the pit. The toddler was taken out of the pit and shifted to a private hospital, but his life could not be saved.

CIAL in a press release condoled the death but gave a bizarre explanation saying that the child trespassed into an area not allowed for the public. CIAL has not yet released the CCTV visuals of the accident in the public domain.
