COIMBATORE: The unborn child of the woman who was pushed off a train by a man during an attempted rape has died. Doctors said that the fetus suffered a cardiac arrest. The survivor was four months pregnant. The woman is undergoing treatment at a government hospital in Vellore.
The woman was attacked on Thursday in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. The police have arrested 27-year-old Hemraj in the case. The 36-year-old was travelling from Tiruppur to Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh on the Coimbatore-Tirupati Intercity Express. The attack took place on the 36-year-old woman who was travelling in the ladies compartment of the train at 6.40 am. Seven other women were also in that coach at that time. When the train reached Jolarpettai railway station, all the other women got off. With this, the woman was left alone. It was at this time that Hemraj jumped into the coach. The survivor initially thought that the man had entered the coach by mistake.
Hemraj attempted to rape the woman when he realized that she was alone. The woman tried to defend herself. The man pushed the woman out of the train as she tried to save herself by going into the washroom. The locals who saw this took the woman to the hospital.
The police registered a case and arrested Hemraj based on the woman's statement. Police said that Hemraj, a native of KV Kuppam, has several cases against him and that he had tried to harass women in the past. A habitual offender, Hemraj was recently released on bail in a murder case. The Railways has announced that a compensation of Rs 50,000 will be paid to the survivor.
