NEW DELHI: Following the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) defeat in the Delhi assembly elections, Atishi resigned as Chief Minister and submitted her resignation to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on February 9 in New Delhi.
During the resignation handover, Saxena reportedly attributed the party's loss to the neglect of the Yamuna River's pollution, stating that it was a "curse of Yamuna Maa."
He implied that despite repeated warnings regarding public interest issues, specifically the cleaning of the Yamuna, the previous government led by Arvind Kejriwal failed to address them. Atishi apparently did not respond to the lieutenant governor's remarks.
Prior to this, while campaigning for the Delhi elections, Union Home Minister Amit Shah pledged that the BJP government would construct a Yamuna River Front within three years of assuming power. He criticised Kejriwal for not cleaning the Yamuna River as promised and asserted the BJP's commitment to the river's restoration.
