KOCHI: The Crime Branch has conducted raids at the establishments of Ananthu Krishnan, the accused in the half-price scam. The raids were carried out in detail at his offices in Kochi. Investigators found that the accused had also used Kudmbashree for the fraud.
The first raid was conducted at Social Bee Ventures in Panampilly Nagar, Kochi. Various NGOs and individuals had transferred money to the accounts of Social Bee Ventures and Professional Service Innovations in Kalamassery, trusting Ananthu’s assurances. Reports indicate that the accused had used these firms to execute agreements with victims who were promised vehicles and other goods at half price. Ananthu was also brought to these locations for evidence collection.
As more complaints surfaced, investigators discovered that the scam was also promoted through Kudumbashree. The Kudumbashree District Mission Coordinator in Malappuram had issued a letter to CDS Chairpersons stating that scooters and laptops could be availed at a discounted rate. The letter also mentioned that payments could be made through the JSS committee in Nilambur and included details about the quality of the goods.
The total scale of the fraud is yet to be fully assessed, but estimates suggest it could amount to nearly Rs 1,000 crore. Ananthu reportedly collected Rs 60,000 each from 40,000 people, promising them scooters. A total of Rs 240 crore was received under this scheme, but only 18,000 people received vehicles. Additionally, money was collected from 13,000 people under the pretence of providing sewing machines.
