BENGALURU: The Centre is planning to launch a high-speed rail corridor project to connect the three cities of Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The central government estimates that this will reduce the travel time to all three cities. The project is being prepared in such a way that it will be possible to travel from Hyderabad to Bengaluru in just two hours. Then, from Bengaluru, one can reach Chennai in 20 minutes.
With this, the travel time in all three cities can be reduced by up to ten hours. The train will travel at a speed of 320 kmph on the high-speed rail corridor. With the implementation of the new project, traveling between the three cities will be more convenient than air travel.
Normally, it takes one hour and 15 minutes to reach the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru from the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad. Similarly, the time taken to reach the Chennai International Airport from the Kempegowda International Airport is one hour and 20 minutes. However, after boarding and other security checks, it will take more than three hours.
With the implementation of the new project, it is possible to travel by train faster than by plane. The Hyderabad-Chennai high-speed corridor is estimated to be 705 km long and the Hyderabad-Bengaluru corridor is 626 km long. Currently, government consultancy firm Rail India Technical and Economic Services Limited (RITES) has invited tenders for conducting the final survey. The project is expected to cost Rs 33 crore. Only high-speed trains will operate on these corridors. The new corridor will be designed on the model of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed corridor.
