Addiction to drugs and screens; Human Rights Commission launches prevention plan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Human Rights Commission, under the leadership of Justice Alexander Thomas, Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission, has formulated a project to effectively combat, through scientific methods, the addiction of children in the coastal areas to drugs and mobile screens. The project is being implemented in the coastal villages of Anchuthengu and Aryanad in Thiruvananthapuram district.

The project is being implemented by Loyola College of Social Sciences (Autonomous). The project outline for this has been submitted to the Human Rights Commission, Department of Social Justice.

A comprehensive survey will be conducted in coastal villages and a detailed study will be conducted among the children. Preventive measures to end addictions that adversely affect the body and mind of children are planned to be implemented in collaboration with the government and non-governmental organizations.

The situation of excessive interest in drugs will be studied. The project will be implemented with the active cooperation of the government. The project will be implemented from the perspective of protecting human rights by utilizing the possibilities of education, health and law. A whistleblower group will also be formed to provide information to the authorities to eliminate drug use.

The project will be implemented among students between the ages of 10 and 18 in five selected schools. The duration of the project is one year. The project envisages providing deaddiction treatment to children addicted to drugs. Awareness, home visits and seminars will be organized for students, teachers and parents. The main goal is to detect and prevent drug use at an early stage.
