THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A major security breach took place in the Thiruvananthapuram medical college on Saturday. A scrap worker allegedly stole surgical body parts sent for testing in the lab. Specimens of 17 patients were stolen.

The scrap worker was taken into police custody. Body parts for examination are usually kept in the lab near the pathology department. On Saturday morning, the ambulance staff and attendant brought the organs to the department.

After placing the organs in an empty part of the lab, the employees left. The organs were missing when they returned, which prompted them to inform the police. During the subsequent investigation, the accused, found wandering around the lab, was taken into custody. Police doubt that the accused stole the organs, mistaking them for valuable items.

The police have also stated that the exact information can only be known after further interrogation. Meanwhile, there has been no response from the medical college authorities regarding this issue.
