KOZHIKODE: The Drugs Control Department has found that cosmetics such as lipstick and face packs contain dangerous levels of mercury. The permissible limit is one ppm (parts per million). Some contain 12,000 times this amount. The serious discovery was made during ‘Operation Soundarya’ conducted by the Drugs Control Department to catch fake cosmetics in the market.
The third phase of inspection is currently underway. 101 establishments were inspected. Cases have been registered against 12 establishments that were unlicensed and did not comply with the Cosmetics Act of 2020. Substandard cosmetic products worth more than Rs 1.5 lakh were seized. 59 samples have been sent for testing.
Excessive mercury can affect internal organs. The body absorbs two percent of what is applied. When these don't get excreted, they will affect the kidneys. Doctors say that they can also cause vomiting, diarrhea, etc. There are some face packs and creams that give quick results. Using such will gradually lead to the loss of originality of the skin.
