Ultraviolet radiation levels in dangerous way; Temperatures rises in state, Kollam on red alert

KOLLAM: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert in Kollam as temperatures rises in the state. It warns that the ultraviolet radiation level in Kollam is in a dangerous manner. Yellow alerts have also been issued in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod.

The IMD had earlier informed that the temperature is likely to rise to 38 degrees Celsius in Palakkad today and to 37 degrees Celsius in Kollam and Thrissur. It was also informed that it is likely to rise to 36 degrees Celsius (two to three degrees Celsius higher than normal) in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod.


High temperature alert
• Avoid sun exposure between 11 am and 4 pm.

• Use a hat, umbrella, and sunglasses during the day.

• Wear cotton clothes.

• Drink plenty of water, juice, fruits, etc.

• Try to rest in the shade.

• Drink plenty of water even if you do not feel thirsty.

• Avoid alcohol, coffee, tea, carbonated soft drinks, etc. during the day.


• Elderly people, young children, pregnant women, people with serious illnesses, and those who work in the sun should be especially careful.

• Keep the doors and windows of the house open.

• Wear footwear when going out. It is better to use an umbrella or hat.

• Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Encourage the use of ORS solution, butter milk, etc.

• There is a high possibility of fires increasing and spreading in places like markets, buildings, waste collection and storage centers (dumping yards). Fire audits should be conducted and proper safety precautions should be taken. Those living near these and those running establishments should be especially vigilant.

• There is a possibility of forest fires spreading in the heat. Those living near forest areas and tourists should be especially vigilant. Situations that can cause forest fires should be avoided. The instructions of the Forest Department should be strictly followed.

• Clean drinking water should be ensured for students in educational institutions and air circulation should be ensured in classrooms. When the exam season comes, water availability should also be ensured in the exam halls.
