IDUKKI: A woman has been arrested on the complaint of her son, a soldier for extorting money after pawning 24 sovereigns in Thankamany. The arrested is Binsy Jose of Achankanam. Ambika of Muvattupuzha was also arrested for helping her to hide.
Binsy’s son Abhijith is a soldier in the Assam Rifles. Abhijith's wife and parents lived in the same house. Binsy pawned Abhijith's wife's ornaments of 14 sovereigns at intervals. Along with that, she also pawned 10 sovereigns of gold of her daughter working in Thiruvananthapuram. Binsy has no answer to the question on what she did with the Rs 12 lakh she got in this way.
Abhijith's wife had asked Binsy about the gold found missing. When asked many times, she said that she had pawned it. Abhijith then filed a complaint with the police. With this, Binsy approached the court for anticipatory bail. However, the court asked her to surrender before the investigating officer. She was given ten days for that. However, when they did not appear, the SHO and his team arrested them near Vandiperiyar yesterday.
Binsy was arrested she was returning after meeting a sorcerer. Despite being questioned, she did not reveal on what they did with the money. She said that she used the money for household needs. However, Binsy's husband and son have denied this. She has also taken a loan of about Rs 8 lakh from nearby self-help groups. She said that was also spent for the house.
The police suspect that Binsy used the money for witchcraft. Evidence related to this has been recovered from the house. Abhijith handed over the items including copper plates to the police. Binsy and Ambika will be produced in the court and remanded. The police have decided to take them into custody and question them further.
