The Mohanlal-starrer Empuraan has created history by becoming the first Malayalam film to surpass a worldwide theatrical share of Rs 100 crore. The landmark achievement was shared by lead actor Mohanlal and director Prithviraj Sukumaran on their official social media handles.
Empuraan has achieved this historic milestone just a week after its release. Earlier, the makers had revealed that Empuraan had grossed Rs 200 crore within five days of hitting screens.Strong pre-release buzz and record-breaking pre-booking numbers had hinted at a massive opening, with the ticketing platform BookMyShow even crashing due to an overwhelming rush for tickets.
Following its release, Empuraan sparked debate over perceived similarities between its storyline and the 2002 Gujarat riots, along with controversy surrounding the antagonist's name. These issues triggered calls for a boycott, leading to approximately 24 cuts. Nevertheless, the film swiftly surged past Rs 200 crore in box office collections and achieved a global theatrical share of Rs 100 crore, undeterred by the criticism and controversy.
