KOCHI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has served a notice again to industrialist and filmmaker Gokulam Gopalan in the FEMA (Foreign Exchange Management Act) case. He has been directed to appear for interrogation on April 22nd. The ED has summoned Gokulam Gopalan again to question him over the violation of the Foreign Exchange Act. Gokulam Gopalan was questioned for six hours at the ED's Kochi office yesterday.
The ED has found that he has received money from expatriates for chit funds after violating FEMA law. The ED had registered a case in this regard in 2022. The ED has clarified that further proceedings in this case are presently underway. The ED has asked Gokulam Gopalan to produce the details of the expatriates included in the chit funds. The details related to this was earlier provided to the ED in a pen drive. However, the ED has asked him to provide more information.
The ED in an investigation has found that around Rs 593 crore was received from expatriates for chit funds in violation of the law. The ED said that 75 percent of this was received in cash. There are also reports that many people who went abroad after joining the chit fund gave statements the other day. The ED had recently searched Gokulam Gopalan's offices in Chennai and Kozhikode.
Gokulam Gopalan had responded to the media yesterday after ED's interrogation. He said that he had replied to all the questions of ED. They asked questions as they had doubts and they have the authority to do so. Meantime, he did not clarify on which issue he was interrogated. He added that they had only worked in the film industry and had not committed any other irregularities.
