NEW DELHI: India has reaffirmed its decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack. A meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah finalised the strict implementation of the suspension. The central government stated that a plan is already in place to stop the flow of water to Pakistan.
Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Paatil informed that three separate plans—short-term and long-term—have been prepared. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also participated in the high-level meeting.
The meeting further decided to inform the World Bank about India's decision to suspend the treaty. It was also agreed to enhance the storage capacity of dams on the rivers mentioned in the treaty. India had officially informed Pakistan about the suspension of the agreement the other day. Jammu and Kashmir's former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had welcomed the decision.
Meanwhile, security forces continue their anti-terror operations across Jammu and Kashmir. Joint teams of the army and police are conducting searches, including in residential areas, particularly in the homes of individuals previously involved in terrorism-related cases.
