PATHANAMTHITTA: The baby abandoned by his mother after giving birth and later rescued by police and handed over to the Child Welfare Committee, has now flown to Italy with his new parents. The mentally retarded child has been named Nikith which means 'divinely knowledgeable'.

An Italian couple adopted the baby, whom many were reluctant to adopt. A woman of Kotta in Pathanamthitta, put the baby in a bucket in the bathroom after giving birth at home on April 4, 2023. The woman reached a private hospital in Chengannur due to excessive bleeding. She told the doctors that the baby had died after giving birth and that she had buried him. However, her eldest son, who was with her, revealed that the baby was in the bucket.

The hospital authorities immediately informed the police and the Child Welfare Committee. A police team led by SHO Vipin reached the woman's house and during a search, heard the baby crying from the bathroom. Then without wasting a single moment, sub inspector Abhilash ran with the baby and took him to the hospital in a police jeep.

After reaching the hospital and completing the procedures, the newborn was taken to the children’s hospital. The treatment was carried out by a team led by hospital superintendent Dr K P Jayaprakash to restore the newborn's life. The child was taken care of by two women from Thanal, a child protection centre n Omallur.

The couple, who have a child, had applied to the Central Adoption Resource Authority of the central government to adopt a second child. After completing all the procedures, they reached Omallur child protection centre in February and took over the baby. The baby’s mother had earlier signed a consent stating that she cannot take care of the baby.
