KATTAPPANA: The police have taken into custody the man who left his girlfriend with the car that was involved in the accident while they were travelling together.

The incident took place at around 7 am yesterday near the Alady bend on the Puliyanmala - Kuttikkanam hilly highway. Suresh (41) and his companion, Naveena (30), a native of Pambanar, were injured on the Alady slope. The car they were travelling in fell twenty feet down a ditch. Suresh left the scene, leaving the seriously injured woman behind. The police, realizing that the car belonged to Suresh, took him into custody from his house. Suresh and Naveena had been living together for months. It was an autorickshaw driver who informed the police that there has been an accident and the woman who was involved in the accident was unconscious. Naveena was taken to Kattappana Taluk Hospital and given primary treatment before being shifted to Kottayam Medical College Hospital. Suresh's injuries are not serious. He was sent to the hospital after being questioned at the station. Suresh was instructed not to leave the station limits.

Friendship through Facebook

Relatives said that Naveena, who met Suresh through Facebook, moved in with him a month and a half ago. The two had an argument. Suresh said that Navena had tried to commit suicide by swallowing pills and that the accident occurred while she was being taken to the hospital. Suresh stated that Naveena grabbed the steering wheel and forcibly turned the car, causing it to overturn. The police did not believe Suresh's statement as the car was found lying in the opposite direction. The real information will be revealed only after Naveena regains consciousness.

Chronic drunkard

The police said that there are doubts about how Suresh reached home from the scene of the incident, whether the car overturned, and whether Suresh escaped before it overturned. Police will record Naveena's statement and conduct a detailed investigation. The police said that Suresh is a chronic drinker and was drunk even when the accident occurred.
