NASA astronaut and Indian-origin Sunita Williams, who was stuck in the space station for nine months due to technical problems in the spacecraft, returned to Earth in the last week of March. The whole world had seen pictures of Sunita and other astronauts while they were in the space station. What most people noticed in all those pictures was that Sunita Williams never tied her hair. There is a scientific answer to why female astronauts including Sunita Williams do not tie their hair while in space.
In the microgravity of space, hair does not fall down like it does on Earth. In all the pictures of women from space, you can see that their hair is up. Since hair does not fall down and cause any trouble in space, there is no need for hairbands to tie it up. Astronauts do not use shampoo to wash or towels to dry their hair. The hair will dry quickly if they just untie it after washing. This is the reason why female astronauts do not tie their hair. Some astronauts don't like to tie their hair, which is another reason.
Astronauts wash their hair with hot water. A video of this shared by NASA astronaut Karen Nyberg on YouTube had garnered a lot of attention.
