OTTAWA: Mark Carney consolidated his power in Canada, paving the way for resolving the rift in diplomatic relations with India and restoring friendship. Incumbent Prime Minister Carney and his Liberal Party won the federal election on Monday. He has been serving as Prime Minister since March, replacing Justin Trudeau, who resigned due to unfavourable political circumstances.
Carney had stated during the election campaign that he would improve relations with India. Carney also plans to expand trade with countries, including India, to overcome US President Donald Trump's tariff threats.
Canada is tightening restrictions, including on student visas, amid rising immigration. His predecessor, Trudeau, soured relations with India by encouraging Khalistanis. Trudeau's anti-India stance drew sharp criticism within the Liberal Party.
Trudeau's failed immigration policy and rising inflation alienated the people. With the Liberal Party facing a crushing defeat in the election, Trudeau resigned.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Carney for his massive victory.
