THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As the Vizhinjam port is to be dedicated to the country by the Prime Minister on May 2, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has highlighted the achievements in the construction of the international port. The Chief Minister said that the port is a gift to every Malayali in Kerala from the government, which is entering its 10th year.
"Vizhinjam is a project that brings economic change from the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent. The LDF government's determination has made the project a reality. The state government is bearing two-thirds of the project cost. Vizhinjam has the deepest embankment in India.
278 ships reached Vizhinjam in the three-month trial run before the inauguration. Five and a half lakh containers have been delivered to Vizhinjam so far. The Vizhinjam port will function in any weather. The first agreement was that the government would start receiving revenue by 2039, 15 years after the port started operating. This caused a loss to the state. However, according to the current supplementary agreement, revenue will start being received in 2034 itself. This sub-contract of the LDF government has become the port's gain," the Chief Minister said.
