LUCKNOW: In a shocking incident, a youth threw acid on his former lover for withdrawing from the romantic relationship. The incident took place in Mau district in Uttar Pradesh. The acid attack took place just days before the woman's scheduled wedding to another person. Since her father had passed away, she had been handling all wedding arrangements herself. Three persons, including the woman's former boyfriend, Ram Janam Singh Patel, have been arrested in connection with the case.

Ram had reportedly opposed the woman’s decision to marry another man. Her wedding was scheduled for May 27. The attack happened last Thursday while she was returning home after withdrawing money from a bank. The woman sustained serious burns on her face, shoulder and neck as a result of the acid attack. Locals rushed her first to a primary health centre and then to a hospital. Reports indicate that she suffered more than 60 per cent burns.

Police have seized the bike used by the accused during the attack. According to the statement given to the police, the accused claimed he only intended to cause minor burns to stop the wedding. He also expressed his desire to marry the woman.

A similar incident had occurred last month in Shahjahanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, where a man suspected his wife of having an extramarital affair and allegedly threw acid on her and their two daughters.
