KOZHIKODE: Power has been restored at the emergency department of Kozhikode Medical College. The electricity had been cut off yesterday following an incident involving smoke emanating from the UPS room of the MRI machine in the Emergency Medicine Department. The decision to restore the power supply was taken at a review meeting chaired by Health Minister Veena George after her visit to the medical college today.
According to a press release from the minister, power has been partially restored on the ground floor and fully restored on the other six floors. The smoke originated from the UPS room connected to the MRI machine in the Emergency Medicine Department. Both the MRI machine and the UPS ( a Philips device) are under warranty until October 2026. The maintenance of the UPS is handled byy an agency appointed by Philips. This agency inspects the equipment every six months and submits a report confirming that everything is in working order, with copies sent to both Philips and the medical college.
In the wake of the incident, the police have launched an investigation. CCTV footage and access to the UPS room will also be examined, the minister added.
