Woman drowns after slipping from island in Periyar

KOCHI: A 27-year-old woman drowned after slipping from an island in the middle of the river near the Panamkuzhi pump house in Periyar. The dead is Nandana, daughter of Subhash and Usha Kumari from Perumbara Vrindavanika in Cherthala Municipality. She came here along with her friend Amit of Kuthirapanthy in Alappuzha.

The incident happened Saturday evening at 4.30 pm. While climbing onto the island in the middle of the river to see the view, Nandana slipped and fell. Amit brought the woman to the shore and with the help of locals took her to the hospital in Perumbavoor, but her life could not be saved. The body is kept in Perumbavoor Taluk Hospital. Vrinda is her sister.
