Woman falls into well while washing clothes, husband, mother-in-law die while trying to save her

VIRUDHUNAGAR: A man and his mother died while trying to save his wife, who fell into a well while washing clothes. The incident happened at Elayirampannai near Sattur in Virudhunagar of Chennai. Maheshwari (35) of Ramanathapuram accidentally fell into the well while washing clothes. The dead are Raja (45), her husband and his mother Rajammal (65).

The incident happened Monday morning. Hearing Maheshwari's screams, Raja jumped into the well. Rajammal also jumped into the well after seeing her son struggling in the water. Maheshwari managed to escape as she reached the edge of the well. However, Raja and Rajammal drowned because they did not know to swim. Their neighbors informed the Elayirampannai police about the incident. Firefighters and rescue workers reached the spot and after about half an hour of effort, the bodies were recovered. The bodies have been shifted to Sattur Government Hospital for postmortem. The Elayirampannai police have registered a case and started an investigation into the incident.
