NEW DELHI: The scheme to provide free treatment up to Rs 1.5 lakh to those injured in road accidents has come into effect on May 5. The notification was issued by the Union Ministry of Road Transport. Free treatment will be provided for seven days from the date of the accident.
Those injured in road accidents anywhere in the country will get the benefit as per the conditions. The National Health Authority is responsible for implementing the scheme in coordination with the police, hospitals and state health agencies. The nodal agency in the states will be the respective road safety councils.
Centre will provide the money
The money for the hospitals will be provided by the central government. The scheme, which was launched in Chandigarh on March 14, 2024, was implemented on a pilot basis in six states and is being rolled out nationwide. The nodal agency will coordinate with the National Health Authority to prepare the list of hospitals, ensure treatment, and transfer money for treatment to the hospitals through a designated portal. The central government will also form a steering committee to monitor the implementation of the scheme.
