MUMBAI: Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket. Rohit made the announcement through a note shared on social media. Last year, shortly after India’s victory in the T20 World Cup in June, he had announced his retirement from T20I cricket. However, the 38-year-old Rohit has confirmed that he will continue to play for India in the One Day International (ODI) format.
Currently, Rohit Sharma is with the IPL team Mumbai Indians. After the IPL, India is scheduled to tour England next month. With this announcement, it is now confirmed that a new captain will lead India in the five-match Test series. Rohit’s decision comes following a string of inconsistent performances in the longest format, most notably during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia last year, where India suffered a 3-1 series defeat under his captaincy. The only win in that series came in the opening Test under the stand-in leadership of Jasprit Bumrah.
The 38-year-old made a memorable Test debut in 2013 against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, scoring a century in his maiden appearance. Over the course of 67 Tests, he amassed 4,301 runs, including 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries, with a career-best score of 212.
