ALAPPUZHA: A bride withdrew from her marriage after the groom’s family opposed her from wearing imitation jewelry along with gold. She withdrew when both families were engaged in talks at the Kareelakulangara police station on the previous day of the marriage. The wedding was scheduled to take place near the Haripad temple on Thursday. The two got engaged two years ago.
The bride's family bought jewelry of 15 sovereigns. The bride's mother informed the groom's family that she would also wear imitation jewelry along with it. However, it is alleged that the groom's family opposed the decision of wearing artificial gold. It is also alleged that when the haldi celebrations was held at the bride's house three days before the wedding, some of the groom's relatives insulted the girl for wearing imitation jewelry.
The bride's relatives then filed a complaint with the police. During the talks held in the station, the groom and his relatives agreed to the marriage. However, the woman said that she was withdrawing from the wedding for insulting her family in the name of jewelry. The bride’s mother said the groom's family had taken a chain of 4.5 sovereigns and Rs 50,000 for the wedding expenses. She also said that she would move legally to get back the Rs 2.5 lakh spent for the engagement and the money spent for wedding preparations.
