MUMBAI: A Malayali youth arrested by the Maharashtra Police for criticizing Operation Sindoor on social media has been remanded in police custody until May 13. Activist and independent journalist Rejaz M Sheeba Sydeek (26), a native of Edappally, Kochi, was arrested from a hotel in Nagpur.

Charges including waging war against the government and inciting riots have been put against Rejaz.

Later, the police also arrested Rejaz's girlfriend Isha Kumari (22), a resident of Nagpur. The FIR also states that Rejaz had links with the CPI-Maoist organization. There is also a case against Rejaz in Kerala.

Meanwhile, Kerala police warned people to desist from posting inflammatory content on social media amidst the India-Pakistan conflict.

Fake news messages linking and exaggerating border conflicts are becoming widespread on social media. Pakistani handles are the source of many of the false news. The fact-checking department of the Press Information Bureau is on high alert to detect fake news.
