NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court harshly criticized the minister for making hateful remarks against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who briefed the military action in Operation Sindoor. The Supreme Court sharply rebuked Madhya Pradesh BJP Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah.
The court said individuals occupying constitutional posts should exercise restraint in speech. The court also said that a minister should show some sense of sensitivity when the country is going through a serious situation. The criticism was made by a bench of Chief Justice B R Gavai.
The Madhya Pradesh High Court in Jabalpur had earlier ordered to register a case against Vijay Shah. A bench of Justices Atul Sreedharan and Anuradha Shukla, who intervened on their own initiative, directed the police chief to register a case against Vijay Shah by 6 pm yesterday.
Shah, who is handling the tribal welfare department in the BJP government, made the controversial speech at a recent event. After the speech sparked a controversy, BJP general secretary B L Santhosh explained that Sofiya is the pride of India. He also said that Sofiya has become the pride of the younger generation in just seven days.
Shah, who initially said that the speech was distorted by the media, later apologized. Colonel Sofiya is someone who has informed the world of India's stance beyond caste and community. I salute her service. I never even dream of insulting her. She is more important than my sister. I apologize not once, but ten times, he said.
