THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Charging electric vehicles during day hours (9 am to 4 pm), will considerably reduce the rate by 30 per cent. The rate will see a spike between the evening at 4 pm and the next morning at 9 am. This has come into effect from May 1. The rate change has been made by reducing the current three time zones to two.
Morning 9 am to 4 pm will be considered a solar zone while 4 pm to 9 am will be a non-solar zone. The price will be increased by 30% during non-solar zones. For this, KSEB has reset the meters. Private companies have also made changes.
Currently, KSEB charges a single rate of Rs 5.50 per unit for day and night. From now on, the rate will be Rs 5 per unit in the solar zone and Rs 9.30 in the non-solar zone. With the sharp rise in electricity consumption in the country, the central government implemented the reform to utilize solar power. The Regulatory Commission has permitted this implementation in the state.
