Red alert issued in Kerala; Heavy rainfall with thunderstorms on cards

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Monsoon will be earlier this year. The rain will be intense in the coming days as the Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in various districts of Kerala.

A red alert has been issued for Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts today. The possibility of heavy rainfall has been predicted.

An orange alert has also been issued for Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram districts today. The forecast is for very heavy rainfall. The Central Meteorological Department defines very heavy rainfall as rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours. A yellow alert was issued for the Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki districts today.

The National Oceanographic Research Centre informed a possibility of high waves of 0.3 to 0.7 meters due to the "Kallakadal" phenomenon in Alappuzha (from Chellanam to Azhikkal Jetty), Kollam (from Alappad to Edava), and Thrissur (from Attupuram to Kodungallur) districts from 11.30 pm tonight.
