NEW DELHI: He killed more than fifty people, including taxi drivers. The human fleshes were served to hungry crocodiles to devour. Police caught them and put him in jail. However, a parole was granted and he waited no time to flee.
Soon, he reappeared as a monk. After a two-year investigation, the serial killer was caught by the Rajasthan Police. Devender Kumar Sharma (67), an Ayurvedic doctor and native of Aligarh, UP, known as 'Dr Death', was arrested. He was hiding in Dausa, Rajasthan.
While serving a life sentence in Tihar Jail, he was granted parole in August 2023. Between 2002-2004, taxi drivers and others were killed and their bodies dumped in the crocodile-infested Hazara Canal in Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh.
His modus operandi involved booking taxis and taking them to a deserted place to kill the drivers. The murders were carried out to steal their taxis and sell them for money. Between 1998 and 2004, more than 125 illegal kidney transplants and kidney sales were carried out. Many people were killed and thrown into crocodiles. Fraud was also committed through a fake gas agency.
Murder, kidnapping, and robbery are a few of the many cases charged against him.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment in seven different cases in Delhi, Rajasthan, and Haryana. During police interrogation, he revealed that he had killed more than fifty people. He was first arrested in 2004. A Gurgaon court had sentenced him to death in one case, but it was commuted to life imprisonment on his appeal. This is not his first time fleeing while on parole. In 2020, while on parole he did the usual trick but was caught and put back in jail.
