KOCHI: Rapper Vedan said that some people are attempting to label him as an extremist and separatist. He was responding to questions regarding the criticism from Hindu Aikya Vedi leader K.P. Sasikala.
“These reactions stem from fear of the politics I present. I am simply doing my job. They say my music is filled with caste hatred. Their question about why I am doing rap is undemocratic. Some have even said that casteism began only after Vetrimaaran and Pa. Ranjith started making films. Their claim is that rap has no connection with Dalits. However, in reality, there is absolutely no connection between democracy and extreme Hindutva politics. If there was, I might as well have been singing ghazals. I don’t even have the voice to sing classical music," he remarked.
“There is no force behind me. The only money I have is what you pay me for my performances. Trying to portray me, an independent artist, as part of a political party is sheer foolishness. The targeted attacks against me are proof that my songs are working. The attacks are against the politics I bring forward. There are no extremists behind me. The money I have is properly earned and taxed,” Vedan stated.
