NEW DELHI: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s statement on Tuesday that the slowdown in the automobile sector was due to many factors like the change in the mindset of millennials, who now prefer taxi aggregators like 'Ola' and 'Uber' instead of committing for monthly instalments to own a car has stirred controversy.

She said some studies had revealed that there was a change in the mindset of the Millenials not to commit any EMIs towards buying an automobile and instead of taking Ola, Uber or the Metro (train) services.

"So, a whole lot of factors are influencing the automobile sector. We are all seized of the problem. We will try to solve it", the minister said.

The FM’s remarks came after the reports that the automobile sector is facing the biggest crisis in 20 years.

Meanwhile, Sitharaman’s remarks are receiving sarcastic backlash on social media. The hashtag #BoycottMillennials is now trending on Twitter. Tweets sarcastically ask to boycott the new generations as they are the root of every problem. A tweet said, “Oxygen crisis will occur because millennial inhale more oxygen in the morning”.

Another interesting tweet is “Tourism industry is failing in India because millennials are all busy visiting Russian places like pochinki, georgopool, rozhok”.
