Landslide near Karimuttam but still no system to detect them in advance; rain to intensify from today

MEPPADI (WAYANAD): A strong landslide occurred in the Mundakkai forest area on the 28th of last month. The landslide occurred last month not far from the area where the landslide occurred on July 30th of last year. The landslide can be clearly seen from Chooralmala. There is a large waterfall inside the forest in the Karimuttam area. The landslide occurred near this.

The strong landslide occurred during heavy rains that lasted for a week from May 24 to 30. There are also complaints that the authorities covered up the incident. The water in the Chooralmala River was muddy during the heavy rains. The water level also rose significantly. However, the landslide was not reported much. Although the Karimuttam area is sparsely populated, it is an area with many plantations. Many people, including workers from other states, come to work in these plantations. Revenue officials visited the areas where the landslides occurred. It is assessed that there is no need to worry.

The complaint is that precautions are not being taken even when disasters are recurring. There is no system to detect mishaps in advance. It was announced that a radar system would be set up in Wayanad to detect natural disasters. Not even the initial steps for this have been completed. Even though there is only a month and a half left for the anniversary of the 2024 landslide disaster, no such system has been set up. The Meteorological Department predicts that the rain will intensify again from today. An orange alert has been declared in Wayanad on Thursday. The District Disaster Management Authority has decided to take necessary precautions if the rain intensifies again.
