KANNUR: A police officer has been suspended in Kannur in a bribery case. ASI Ibrahim Seerakath of Payyavoor station was suspended by Kannur Range DIG Yatheesh Chandra pending investigation. The incident took place on May 13.

Ibrahim was conducting a vehicle inspection in front of Payyavuur station during night patrol. Akhil John, a native of Kottayam, who was driving under the influence of alcohol, was released by the ASI after collecting his phone number, without taking him to the station or giving him a notice.

The next day, Ibrahim contacted Akhil John on the phone and demanded money. The ASI demanded a bribe saying that the case could be transferred to someone else's name and registered and dropped. Akhil John was asked to pay Rs 14,000 through Google Pay, saying that payment must be paid to the substitute and in court.

The action was taken because it was found that the ASI had committed a serious disciplinary violation. The suspension action was based on the investigation report of the Kannur Rural Crime Branch DySP.
