NEW DELHI: Crores of people travel on Indian Railways every day. One of the most raised concerns is regarding hygiene and cleanliness in Indian trains. Human faeces across railway tracks in northern India were frequent sights for passengers for years until their disappearance some years back. The bio-toilet system was able to tackle the issue to some extent.
Indian railways are trying to emulate developed nations and cleanliness remains a pivotal mission on the path to modernity. Often we witness trains being washed and cleaned by staff before travel. However, when entering inside, one may be repulsed by the nasty odour and the tidbits of waste lying in nooks and corners. It speaks volumes of the efficiency of the work done by the cleaning staff.
The Union Ministry of Railways has taken note of the issue and is all set to overhaul the cleanliness factor in Indian trains. The days of human labour involved in cleaning trains are numbered. The work will be soon taken over by drones.
The result will be more efficient, believes officials. Moreover, drones will be able to reach even the places that cannot be reached by manual cleaning in trains. The new measures taken by the central government and Indian Railways in collaboration with the Swachh Bharat Mission also include the aim of strengthening automation.
